SRINAGAR – Parts of North Kashmir observed spontaneous shutdown and witnessed clashes on Saturday after a dead body was recovered from paddy fields in Devbugh village of Kunzar tehsil near tourist resort of Tangmarg.
Militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen later said that one of its militant commanders, Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, was killed while fighting with Indian forces in the area.
Spokesperson of the outfit said that Bhat, along with his associates, was on a mission when the Indian Army personnel fired upon them. “There was an Army ambush and Fayaz lost his life during the brief gun fight. However, his other associates managed to escape from the spot,” he said.
He added that Bhat was active in the field from past six years. “He was an active member of Burhanuddin Sarhadi Squad and had participated in various successful operations against Indian Army in border regions,” he said.
Bhat was a resident of Wayil area of Pattan, as per the police sources.
Soon after news about the incident spread, protesters clashes with government forces in parts of North Kashmir, especially in Pattan area, where from three bullet-ridden bodies of militants were recovered early this week.
